The European Union’s Antitrust authority has imposed a record fine of 1.8 billion euros on Apple for violations of competition rules in the music streaming services sector.
According to the investigation, Apple prevents developers of music streaming apps from informing iPhone and iPad users about alternative and more affordable streaming services. The probe was initiated following a complaint from Spotify.
The Vice President of the European Commission stated during a press conference that for a decade, Apple has abused its dominant position in the music streaming market through the App Store. She added that this was done by preventing developers from informing consumers about cheaper alternatives outside of the Apple ecosystem, thereby violating EU antitrust rules. Additionally, the EU has ordered Apple to remove restrictions preventing Spotify and other music streaming services from offering users payment options outside of the App Store.
The Commission, with this decision, prioritizes consumers.
